Expressing milk allows baby to have all of the nutritional benefits of breast milk even when mum cannot feed baby. There are lots of reasons why mum may choose to express milk:

When parents go back to work
To allow partners to get involved
To have some time out!
To build up a store of milk for when parents are not with baby.
