Pictures of celebrities looking slim after giving birth are sending out an unhealthy message. Dr Lopa Ghosh says “Weight gain during pregnancy is normal and to be expected. Studies in the area report it takes on average between eight and twelve months to lose the weight in a healthy way”. Ordinary women are often made to feel like failures for not losing their baby weight in the same mount of time as famous mums. A healthy, balanced diet with a sensible exercise boosts energy levels and help prevent post-natal depression. Dr Ghosh says “It is important the baby receives essential nutrients and that the mother is healthy”. Being a mum is more than just body image.
