Obese New Mums Trial A Drug To Prevent Babies Becoming Overweight

To help prevent babies becoming overweight, a new study of 100 obese mums to be are to be given drugs at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The mums will take part in a three year study to lower obesity rates and reduce difficult births. The drug is not designed to help the mums themselves lose weight but will hopefully the food supply to the baby. The drug Metformin will reduces the blood sugar levels that are passed on to babies in the womb which causing them to get bigger. The study is trying to improve outcomes in pregnancy for women who are overweight as generally the babies tend to be larger and rates of caesarians are much higher.
